The Mencken Society strives to perpetuate the critical acuity, sense of humor, love of the English language (especially its American manifestations), and resolute irreverence of H.L. Mencken, a champion of free thought and aggressive journalism in the twentieth century and a leading iconoclast in American history.

In offering this BBS we, the members of the H.L. Mencken Society, aim to encourage Mencken’s spirit and provide a place on the world-wide web where friends of Mencken may comment on the passing scene. We invite thoughtful, incisive postings. We will not abide partisan political rants or endless attempts to make a point. We will not put up with moronic name calling and foul language. Remember that Mencken wrote his newspaper pieces to persuade and amuse his readers while fitting his copy within limited column space. Please follow his example.
